- Chapter Thirteen -

* * *

Startled, I peer over Sobek's side, checking for the disappointed giant expressing his frustration, only to find clouds below.

Sobek glances over his shoulder at me, one scaly eyebrow raised. Jumpy much?

Glaring at him, I’m only edged further into annoyance as he reciprocates with a playful gleam dancing in his golden-brown eyes. I stick my tongue out and tighten my cloak around my waist, straightening it to cover every inch of the saddle and my legs.

While still visible, I address the others. "Sobek and I will turn invisible and drop below the clouds to get our bearings. Wait here out of the giant's sight. We'll be back in a minute."

Sobek raises both his wings and drops beneath me as he phases into invisibility. My stomach lurches to my throat, and my heart thumps against my rib cage as I'm again flooded with the sensation of falling to my death. The wind pushes up, blowing my hood from my head. My teeth chatter from the cold and the adrenaline as I clamp one hand around the reins and grasp for the hood with the other. When we break through the cloud cover, Sobek extends his wings, and we jerk to a halt, my stomach slamming back into my abdomen.

"Thanks for the warning," I mutter to Sobek.

I can see the edges of his toothy grin from my saddle. My nerves calm after a couple of deep breaths, allowing me to get my bearings and establish the giant’s location. Within a few minutes, I spot the cluster of mountains surrounding a plain in the distance. The snow had made it difficult to see where we had been before.

Pulling on the reins, I spin Sobek in that direction. "Is that the mountain cluster we were at?"

It certainly is. I'd recognize that anywhere. It's a strange formation for mountains to be that close and circling a plain. Without instruction, he ascends to meet the others. The rise is much smoother than the descent, and as we near the group, Sobek's visible golden form appears beneath me.

Indicating the direction of the mountain cluster hidden below the clouds, I say, "We're sure the giant took Eir and Naga that way. I think we should stay above the clouds for a little way. The thin giant that held Tanda and Britta remains not far from here."

Sobek leads the way over the mountains. I shiver and pull my cloak tighter around me, pulling the hood to cover my ears. Every time I use this cloak, I'm thankful I made it, especially in climates like this. I feel for Hildr and Britta, wearing only their fighting leathers. After flying for a while, Sobek gradually drops through the clouds, allowing the others to follow.

A bird's-eye view of Jotunheim spreads below us, and Sobek spreads his wings, gliding just below the clouds. I scan the area, searching for any giants or signs of our friends. The giant we left behind is too far to spot, and I see no sign of other giants in the area.
